The National Boy Scout Jamboree will be held July 15-24, 2013 at “The Summit” in the Appalachian Mountains of West Virginia.  Not only is this a new location for the event, but The Summit itself will be an entirely new facility that is being developed with the Jamboree and Scouting in mind.  Taking advantage of the rivers, mountains, and cliffs available on the newly acquired property, there will be more opportunities for outdoor adventures and exploration.  The new facilities will also be designed for greater environmental protection with an emphasis on walkability and conservation.

Nearby historic cities and sites to combine with the Jamboree

Most troops elect to visit the East’s historic sites the week prior to the Jamboree, although you may certainly do it after, or a mix of both. Any one of our destinations can be combined with your trip to the National Boy Scout Jamboree, but by far Washington DC is the most practical and popular.  The Jamboree is only several hours from Washington DC and the array of memorials, monuments, museums and government buildings are a perfect complement to the Boy Scout’s Oath of duty to country.  In fact, between the White House and the Washington Monument, you’ll find a memorial to the Boy Scouts themselves.

Even closer the Jamboree, are some of the most significant Civil War Battlefields such as Antietam, MD and Harper’s Ferry, WV.  But our top recommendation would be Gettysburg, PA.  Not only was it the largest and most significant of all Civil War battles, but July 2013 marks the 150th anniversary of the battle and there’s sure to be a lot of special recognition and events to mark the occasion.

Consider also visits to New York City, Philadelphia, Jamestown/Williamsburg & Monticello.
